Senior Systems Engineer-Electrolyzers

Position Purpose:
The Senior Systems Engineer leads the design, testing, and integration of test stations for EVOLOH's electrolyzer stacks, as well as the stack integration efforts into commercial balance-of-plant systems. This role is responsible for designing, building, updating and automating test stations, and serving as a topic authority and technical liaison with customers and partners for stack delivery and sales support. The long-term goal of this role is to spend a majority of time as a technical liaison, but the short term will focus on station design, building, commissioning and upgrade and upkeep.
Essential Responsibilities:
Lead technical work related to electrolyzer system ("balance of plant") design, including coaching and mentoring junior systems engineers and technicians
- Lead and complete FMEAs, HAZOPs, SOPs, P&IDs, system updates, and troubleshooting
- Manage supplier communication and part procurement
- Oversee component design and identification
- Direct system assembly and validation
- Ensure proper system operation and maintenance of SOPs
Interact with customers/partners in terms of stack delivery/sale, serving as the technical point of contact and topic authority for commercial applications
Maintain and enhance test station infrastructure:
- Update and optimize 800cm² test station 1
- Develop and demonstrate procedures for updating 100cm² test stations
- Develop and demonstrate procedures for updating research stations
Specify, design, build, test, and operate components and systems external to the electrolyzer stack, including safety assurance for operations
Lead engineering of mechanical, electrical, automated communications, data management, and controls for systems in which stacks are installed, PLC experience is required
Lead product (stack) design verification planning and reporting (DVP&R) and reliability growth (RGP&R) activities
Provide support for partner and customer integration of stacks
Develop, validate, and document product applications guidelines
Serve as technical point of contact for permitting, certification, insurance approvals, etc.
Mentor the systems team and provide feedback to facilitate growth
Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering (required)
- Master of Science or PhD preferred
Work Experience
- 5 years of relevant, hands-on work experience integrating hardware and software systems
- Experience with electrochemical systems testing preferred

- Identifying and solving system faults, root-cause / corrective action
- Needs, requirements, specifications, verification planning and testing, final validation, pilot operations
- CONOPS, SIPOC, DVP/R (design ver.), RGP/R (reliability growth), FMEA, HAZOP, TRL, etc.
- Experience with test station design and operation
- Knowledge of electrochemical systems, particularly electrolyzers
- Project management skills for coordinating testing and integration efforts
Physical Requirements / Work Environment:
Lab, warehouse, and office environment (typical).
Physical demands include:
- Moving objects: Using one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects. May need to move their arms and legs quickly and use their stomach and lower back muscles to support their body for long periods.
- Small object manipulation: Fine motor skills required for handling small components, using precision tools, and manipulating delicate testing equipment. Requires hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, and steady hands for extended periods.
- Sitting and standing for long hours: May need to sit and stand for long hours. Will need to be able to walk around the facility, climb ladders, bend down, and reach up.
- Lifting objects: They may need to be able to handle and lift objects weighing up to25 lbs. alone, and objects weighing up to 50 lbs. in a two-person lift.
Working Conditions:
Safety attire and protective gear are required. May be exposed to chemical fumes, gases, electrical hazards, and loud sounds at distracting noise levels. Work involves the operation of test equipment and systems under various conditions including high pressure and high voltage.
