Description

The Energy Systems Analytics Associate will be responsible for leading direct internal analyses evaluating the technoeconomic dimensions of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). This role will play a critical part in informing Fervo’s commercial strategies, regulatory engagement, and technology development priorities by assessing how system design, deployment, and operational decisions affect EGS value across evolving power markets. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in energy systems modeling and a strong understanding of U.S. energy markets. They will collaborate cross-functionally to translate complex research into actionable insights for stakeholders—including utilities, policymakers, and offtakers—and help position Fervo as a leader in the future of decarbonized baseload energy. This position will report to the Strategy Manager.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Technoeconomic Assessment: Lead in-depth analyses of the value of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) under varying assumptions related to capital costs, deployment pace, geographic distribution, and plant design. These studies will support strategic decisions across Fervo’s commercial, regulatory, and development functions.
  • Facility Optimization: Identify and evaluate engineering and operational strategies to maximize performance and economic return of current and future EGS facilities, including hybrid configurations and off-grid deployments.
  • Transmission & Interconnection Modeling: Conduct power flow and transmission system analyses to assess how infrastructure enables or constrains geothermal deployment. Use findings to inform site selection, interconnection planning, and engagement with regulatory and transmission authorities.
  • Cross-functional Communication: Translate complex modeling results and technical research into accessible, impactful insights to support external messaging, stakeholder engagement, and decision-making by internal teams (e.g., Commercial, Policy, and Communications).
  • Collaboration with External Institutions: Partner with national labs, utility planners, and public utility commissions to improve the representation of geothermal energy in integrated resource plans and modeling tools such as GenX, ReEDS, and RESOLVE.
  • Market Fundamentals Support: Contribute to scenario analysis and strategic insights into emerging market trends, capacity needs, and policy environments to inform long-term business planning and commercial strategy.
  • Thought Leadership & Publication: Author research papers and technical articles for academic journals and industry publications to advance public understanding of geothermal’s role in energy systems and to strengthen Fervo’s position as a technical leader in clean energy innovation.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in energy systems, engineering, economics, or a related technical field
  • Experience in power systems modeling, macro-energy system modeling, or facility-level technoeconomic analysis
  • Proficiency with capacity expansion tools (e.g., GenX, ReEDS, RESOLVE, NEMS) and transmission or integrated planning models used by utilities, national labs, or research institutions
  • Familiarity with the design and economics of enhanced geothermal systems, or comparable dispatchable clean energy technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to simplify and communicate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Strong academic publication record and technical writing skills
  • Self-starter with exceptional organizational and time management skills; capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proven success working with interdisciplinary teams and adapting analytical approaches based on stakeholder needs
  • Deep understanding of U.S. energy market structures, regulatory processes, and transmission planning
