Hardware Systems Engineer (Mechanical + Electrical)

Full-time on-site employee
Company mission and culture
Are you deeply passionate about sustainability? Do you love building new technology, to the point of obsession? Do you strive to be uncommon among uncommon engineers?
The world of fashion is facing a major reckoning. Over 100 million tons of textiles go to waste each year, of which less than 1% goes back into new clothing. Existing recycling methods are unable to handle the heterogeneity of textile waste - until now.
Huminly uses enzymes to enable infinite recycling of textiles. We’re hellbent on improving textile-to-textile recycling from less than 1% to over 90% in the next 4-5 years before taking on global plastic pollution more broadly over the next decade. Using just water, salt, and enzyme, we distill the different materials in textile waste and harness them to make brand-new clothes, over and over again.
At Huminly, we can’t fathom how society’s single-use economy makes sense for future generations and can’t bear to witness Mother Earth get covered in textile and plastic waste. We’re recruiting passionate warriors who are ready to stand up for this planet.
Your role at our company
As a Systems Engineer, you will leverage your mechanical and electrical expertise in building Huminly’s first commercial-scale process for polyester-cotton textile recycling. This process will serve as the real-world testbed for our optimized enzymes.
In this role, you will work closely with our process engineering team to scale our bench-scale process to commercial readiness. This hands-on role is perfect for the creative tinkerer: your day-to-day will involve designing and fabricating new mechanical components, sourcing and combining off-the-shelf equipment, automating mechanical processes, and streamlining module integratio to expand our recycling process to 100+-ton scale.
As a member of an early-stage company team, you will work alongside highly motivated teammates in a fast-paced, mission-driven work environment. The recycling process you help build will serve as the blueprint for the future of textile recycling and propel us on our journey to scale and impact.
This role will be a great fit for you if you:
- Have a demonstrated track record of fabrication projects, whether independently or as part of a startup team
- Excel at rapid prototyping, leveraging efficient computer-aided design and fabrication techniques
- Are fluent in electrical design including Arduino, PLC, and UI interfaces
- Have strong practical knowledge of solids handling, heat transfer, and design and fabrication of large-scale solids processing equipment
- Have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and/or equivalent experience
Startups are hard. This is your ideal arena to play if you:
- Care so deeply about creating impact in the world that nothing can stop you
- Routinely show extraordinary agency in designing and building new things from scratch
- Aren't afraid to leverage constrained resources to meet ambitious timelines
- Actively seek opportunities to put in long hours to achieve incredible accomplishments
- Relentlessly strive to improve your craft and actively seek feedback
- Prioritize extreme efficiency and diligence in building as fast as possible
Passion + Discipline = Impact. Our company's values:
- We are principled: we build what our customers need, not what looks good
- We relentlessly ask why: we do not let challenges become obstacles and we question the way things are usually done
- Momento mori: we iterate fast as time is our most valuable asset
- We make work intense yet fulfilling: we seek immense personal growth together as a team and actively look out for one another
- We stay humble: startups are hard, and we don’t make it harder with ego and excuses
We offer competitive salary and equity compensation according to experience, along with medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
Please note this role will require the ability to lift, carry, push, and assemble heavy objects as well as bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for extended periods.
